For Whom the Bell Tolls - Usually

[December 22, 2004]

Now that is the question: for whom was the bell tolling? For Hrant Matevosian the solitary writer and mentor who, besieged by a burdensome procession of measly go-getters and sycophants, never ever betrayed his brother and similarly bequeathed never to give up, or was it tolling for us who cannot feel at home in our own native land? Was it tolling for him, who made us to be proud to introduce him to the world, or was it for apple-polishing toadies with their filthy lucre who throw dice to expand and expand on this tiny ground? It really depends. The physical death is not that dreadful, after all; what scares me is the inadequate parade of these zombies and their greasy exuberance. Whereas, Hrant Matevosian might be a guiding light through these days, and his writings might unquestionably instruct us more than when he was alive. "This is a work of a genius", Andrei Bitov wrote on the cover of Hrant Matevosian's French edition. William Saroyan was speaking about Hrant Matevosian's immense caliber. We have so much to learn. Until then, may God grant us insight to acknowledge both his presence and legacy-to be worthy to explain why he did not go gentle into that good night 2 years ago.
